According to a news report by Adom Online on January 8, 2025, a total of 118 former parliamentary candidates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have thrown their support behind presidential aspirant Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s January 31, 2026 primaries.
The endorsement was announced at a press conference led by former Sekondi MP Andrew Egyapa Mercer, who also served as Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture.
Mr. Egyapa Mercer explained that the decision followed extensive consultations and careful reflection on the outcome of the 2024 general elections. He cited Dr. Bawumia’s leadership qualities, integrity, and commitment to innovation as reasons why he is the most suitable candidate to lead the party.
“The group’s backing spans all regions and constituencies, reflecting a broad-based consensus within the party’s grassroots and leadership structures,” Mr. Egyapa Mercer said, highlighting Dr. Bawumia’s achievements in public service, economic management, and digital transformation.
He appealed to NPP delegates to vote massively for Dr. Bawumia and called on members to avoid hate speech, emphasizing the need for unity before, during, and after the primaries.
