As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gears up for its national chairmanship elections, internal calls for strategic foresight have intensified.
Dr. Duncan Boombay a leading member of the party, has issued a stern advisory to the party’s presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia urging him to declare his running mate before the leadership polls conclude to safeguard the party’s stability.
The Risk of “Dictatorship” and Internal Strife
According to Dr. Boombay the timing of the running mate selection is critical to ensure the autonomy of the flagbearer.

He indicated that failing to name a deputy before the election of a new National Chairman could expose Dr. Bawumia to undue pressure from party leadership.
If Dr. Bawumia fails to finalize his running mate before the national chairmanship elections are completed there is a high likelihood of controversy, Dr. Boombay stated in an interview with the Correspondent
We risk a situation where a ‘dictatorship’ mindset would rears its ugly face or where the incoming national chairman might attempt to dictate the choice of a running mate for the flagbearer rather than allowing Dr. Bawumia the sovereign right to choose a partner of his preference.
The Case for Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie
In his professional assessment, Dr. Boombay has formally appealed to the presidential candidate to consider Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie the Member of Parliament for the Effiduasi Asokore constituency as his running mate.
Dr. Boombay describes the MP as a level headed politician who is deeply aligned with Dr. Bawumia’s vision and ideological framework.
According to Boombay the synergy between the two is already evident, noting out that Dr. Ayew Afriyie played a substantial role in the flagbearership victory.
Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie has demonstrated roughly 90 percent alignment with Dr. Bawumia’s political maturity, policies and strategic thinking, Boombay remarked.
This alliance is exactly what the party needs to wrestle power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 general elections.
Securing the Party’s Future
The core of Dr. Boombay’s argument rests on the need for preemptive unity.
By securing a running mate now he argues, Dr. Bawumia would effectively insulate himself from future lobbying or potential power struggles that could divide the party base as they prepare for the national electoral contest.
Boombay believes that a proactive approach will allow the party to channel its full energy into dismantling the opposition’s campaign rather than dealing with internal friction regarding ticket composition
