In recent weeks, a wave of discontent has surfaced among supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding the behavior of one of their prominent figures, former Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as “Napo.”

Kofi Agyeman, the leader of a vocal faction within the party has expressed concern during a gathering in Kumasi Dechemso about Napo’s persistent verbal assaults against former President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer for the upcoming elections.

Agyeman’s remarks underscore a growing sentiment within the NPP that the party must pivot away from the “politics of insults” and towards a more respectful and constructive discourse.

He reiterated that Ghanaians are eager to see a leader of integrity and good manners, emphasizing that incessant attacks on Mahama could jeopardize the NPP’s political fortunes in the upcoming elections.

“The campaign of insults is deceitful and cannot win any credible elections,” Agyeman stated, emphasizing the need for genuine political dialogue over personal attacks.

He warned that this approach is not only makes the NPP appear less attractive, but also risks alienating potential voters who are seeking leadership that exemplifies civility and respect.

The supporters contend that Napo’s strategy of attacking Mahama only highlights a deficiency in substantive policy proposals.

“Such insults portray the party as empty,” Agyeman argued, adding that they offer no substantial plan for governance.

Instead, they risk exhausting the electorate’s patience and enthusiasm for the NPP’s vision.

The criticism directed at Napo, they said is not simply a call for abstaining from confrontation; rather, it is a request for the party to engage in meaningful conversations about pressing national issues.

Stressing that voters are increasingly discerning and demand more than just negative rhetoric—they are looking for platforms that present viable solutions to the challenges facing the country.

The Dangers of Divisive Politics.

The NPP supporters who gathered in Kumasi Dechemso voiced a stark warning: the current approach could lead to electoral backlash.

They believe that voters are seeking an alternative to the relentless negative campaigning that has characterized past elections.

Agyeman highlighted that the political climate calls for respectful engagement, suggesting that moving away from incendiary remarks and focusing on policies that resonate with Ghanaians would better position the NPP for success.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the supporters of the NPP are making it clear that they desire a leader who can elevate the discourse beyond personal attacks.

With pivotal elections on the horizon, the call for change within the NPP, as articulated by Kofi Agyeman and his supporters, echoes the broader hunger among Ghanaians for a leader who embodies dignity, respect, and innovative solutions.
