Kumasi, Ghana – In the wake of their recent, resounding electoral defeat, a group of disillusioned New Patriotic Party (NPP) activists are expressing grave concerns about the party’s future, predicting a potential 12-year stint in opposition if significant reforms aren’t implemented.
Led by Kwaku Appiah in the Oforikrom constituency of Kumasi, the group voiced their frustrations, citing internal issues and policy failures as the primary reasons for their party’s downfall.
The disgruntled supporters attributed the NPP’s loss to a toxic mix of “neglect, greed, hatred, and lying attitudes” stemming from the party’s leadership. According to them, these issues alienated them from the public, with many of their supporters, especially the youth, feeling abandoned and disenfranchised.
They described a situation where numerous young people were denied job opportunities, leading to widespread poverty and even family breakdowns. “Under the NPP, many lost jobs, many became poor, and some even lost their husbands and wives.
We were treated with contempt,” Appiah stated, reflecting the sentiments of the group.
The group expressed a bleak outlook for the NPP, indicating that if the party fails to address these fundamental problems, many more will abandon them before the next general election.
They also voiced their belief in the opposition party’s ability to govern effectively. “We believe the NDC will run the country properly and ensure they remain in power, especially after witnessing how the NPP have conducted themselves so poorly.”
The aggrieved supporters pointed to a wave of scandals and alleged corruption that have come to light since the NPP lost power, seeing it as a vindication of their concerns. They demanded accountability, calling on the incoming administration, led by John Mahama, to investigate these allegations thoroughly.
“The wickedness of the NPP has exposed them. We pray that Mahama would investigate the corrupt and jail those who are found culpable in any wrongdoing,” they said.
The group referenced a past statement made by Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, the former NPP Majority Leader and MP for the Suame constituency. They recalled him once warning that the NPP could face 12 years in opposition if they failed to properly care for Ghanaians.
According to them, the former MP had predicted the current situation the party finds itself in.
The sentiments expressed by the Kumasi activists underscore a deep-seated crisis within the NPP following their electoral defeat.
Their prediction of a 12-year opposition period highlights the urgent need for the party to undertake a critical self-examination and implement sweeping changes to rebuild trust amongst disaffected supporters and the broader Ghanaian electorate.
