At a time when the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) should be consolidating its forces and crafting a definitive strategy for electoral victory in the next general elections, the party finds itself grappling with internal combustion.
Once again, internal discord and confusion have become the party’s hallmark and is threatening to derail its political ambitions in its traditional stronghold.
While deep seated rifts have historically plagued the party’s top hierarchy, the contagion of mistrust has now permeated the grassroots level.
The recent internal constituency elections in the Ashanti Region have proven to be yet another source of open sores for the party as disgruntled activists take a stand against what they described it as “manipulative political machinery.”
Allegations of Foul Play and Forgery:
Reports reaching our newsdesk indicate that a significant number of party activists who contested for various constituency positions have threatened to defect to other political parties if the alleged irregularities are not addressed.
Many candidates feel cheated and claim that the electoral process was hijacked by certain party bigwigs and Members of Parliament (MPs) who allegedly played dirty games to snuggle in their favorites.
The atmosphere is thick with accusations of alleged documentary forgeries and procedural sabotage.
Aggrieved members are calling on the party leadership to hold perpetrators accountable, suggesting that the integrity of the elections was compromised at multiple levels.
Hotspots of Political Volatility:
The resentment is not isolated; it has manifested in several key constituencies that have now become a hot political battlegrounds.
According to our findings, significant confusion and strategic manipulations occurred in Bantama, Kumasi, Oforikrom, Obuasi, Ashanti Akim and Manso Nkwanta.
In these areas, contestants have openly registered their anger, issuing ultimatums to the national leadership.
If the mistakes created to disqualify or cause the defeat of legitimate candidates are not reversed, we have every right to take our political talents elsewhere one disgruntled activist noted, echoing the sentiments of many who feel alienated by the current party leadership.
National Executives Intervention:
As the threats of mass defection intensify, the National Executive Committee has been forced to step in to dampen the flames of rebellion.
Sources close to the national leadership confirmed that the party is taking the grievances seriously to prevent a total collapse of their Ashanti base.
Measures currently being implemented include:
Cancellation of Contested Elections: Several constituency elections have been annulled to allow for thorough investigations.
Fresh Elections: Plans are underway to host re runs in the affected areas to restore democratic legitimacy.
Investigative Committee: A high level committee has been tasked with probing the alleged electoral malfeasance and identifying the individuals behind the systematic manipulation
Disciplinary Actions: The party has hinted that official sanctions against members found guilty of orchestrating the electoral conflicts would be enforced.
The Path Forward:
While the NPP leadership views these developments as a “purely internal affair,s” the implications for the party’s future are significant.
With the national elections looming, the party cannot afford to lose its grassroots backbone in the Ashanti region, a region traditionally viewed as the world bank of the NPP.
