The vision to eradicate poverty through grassroots empowerment is often a noble pursuit, yet it remains vulnerable to the harsh realities of human conduct.
President John Dramani Mahama’s “Nkonkonkete” project designed to provide poultry seed capital to vulnerable citizens was heralded as a blueprint for sustainable job creation.
However, the initiative is now mired in controversy following reports that a section of beneficiaries have allegedly consumed their poultry stock to render the wealth creation policy a “meals on wheels” event.

As reports confirming the consumption of these chickens surfaced public outrage has reached a fever pitch with many Ghanaians demanding immediate probity and accountability.
The Minister’s Disappointment:
Sector Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Eric Opoku, has expressed profound disappointment regarding the misuse of the program’s resources.
Through official follow ups and mediation efforts the Ministry confirmed that several beneficiaries have openly admitted to have consumed the small chickens instead of nurturing them into a sustainable livelihood.
For the Ministry, this behavior represents a direct betrayal of the trust placed in the community to transition from poverty to
Public Sentiment: A Call for Justice:
An opinion poll conducted among various citizens reveals a strong appetite for punitive measures.
The consensus is that the project was not a food aid program, but a capital investment, and its misuse constitutes a financial loss to the state.
The National Sabotage Narrative: Kofi Agyeman, a resident of Kumasi did not mince words as he labelled the accused beneficiaries as “national saboteurs.
He argues that such actions deliberately undermine the President’s developmental agenda and demand for immediate probe that could followed by prosecution to ensure that public funds are treated with the seriousness it deserves.
The Rule of Law: Echoing this sentiment, Elizabeth Manu of Ashanti Mampong argued that the state cannot foster a culture of impunity.
She asserted that since those involved have caused financial loss to the state, they should be made to face the full rigors of the law without fear or favor.
The Political Divide: Even across the political front, the behavior has been condemned as shortsighted.
Robert Dawda an Offinso based self acclaimed NPP supporter noted that such acts of ingratitude hinder future government interventions.
If certain Ghanaians continue to show ingratitude for government gestures, how can the government be convinced to do more?” he questioned.
Moving Forward:
While a vocal segment of the population is calling for arrests and prosecutions to serve as a deterrent to others, others are urging the government to remain focused.
Supporters have advised President Mahama to continue discharge his duties as a statesman with a word of of encouragement that the evil that men do lives after them.
The incident highlights a recurring challenge in development economics: the culture of dependency” versus the culture of production.
While the Nkonkonketene project aimed to provide the tools for production, the beneficiaries’ actions suggest that rigorous monitoring, effective training and strict enforcement of contract terms are essential for any future government initiatives
