President John Dramani Mahama has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its Minority in Parliament to participate in the National Economic Dialogue, stressing that Ghana’s economic challenges require collective efforts rather than political division.
Speaking during his State of the Nation Address, Mahama referenced the previous Senchi Economic Forum, noting that the NPP did not participate in that engagement. He appealed to the opposition to avoid repeating what he described as a missed opportunity and instead join discussions aimed at finding solutions to the country’s economic difficulties.
Mahama’s call comes amid growing scrutiny of the government’s economic management. Nhyiaeso Member of Parliament Stephen Amoah had raised concerns over the government’s borrowing, claiming that the administration had borrowed GH¢59 billion within a short period.
Amoah questioned the source of funds being used to finance government programmes and payments, contrasting the figure with the amount he claimed the previous Akufo-Addo administration borrowed during its time in office.
The economic debate comes against the backdrop of concerns over unemployment, particularly among young people. Mahama described youth unemployment as a serious national challenge capable of creating frustration and posing risks to national security.
To address the problem, the President announced the establishment of a Ministry of Youth Development, stressing the need for urgent measures to create opportunities for young people.
Mahama also expressed confidence that the government’s economic measures would produce positive results over time. He called on citizens and stakeholders across the political divide to contribute to efforts aimed at rebuilding the economy.
The National Economic Dialogue is expected to provide a platform for government officials, political parties, economists, businesses, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to discuss Ghana’s economic challenges and explore possible solutions.
Mahama’s appeal for opposition participation highlights the importance of cooperation as the government seeks to address economic concerns, while the Minority continues to scrutinise its borrowing and spending decisions.
