A member of the National Democratic Congress Regional Youth Working Committee and also Welfare Director in the Bono Region, Madam Regina Nketia has called for intensified efforts to combat sexual immorality among the young people particularly in schools and on the social media platforms.
The Welfare Director who was speaking to the Correspondent in an interview urged parents, teachers, religious leaders and other stakeholders to work together and educate the young people particularly the females to become abreast with the dangers that sexual immorality poses as a treat to human life and the need to avoid it.
According to Regina Nketia the growing influence of social media makes it important for young people to be guided on how to use digital platforms responsibly.
She stressed that parents and guardians need to take bold and active roles in monitoring and counselling their children while creating an environment where young people can openly discuss challenges they face.
She further appealed to schools to strengthen moral and sex education programmes to help students too understand issues surrounding relationships, consent, personal safet and responsible use of the new social media.
Regina Nketia stressed that fighting sexual immorality should not be left to the schools alone, saying that it requires a collective effort from families, communities, religious organisations, civil society groups, and government and all stakeholders.
She therefore called for a sustained public education and mentorship programmes that aimed at protecting young people and promoting responsible values in both schools and online.
