Farmers Fight “Galamsey ” Chief For Destroying Cocoa Farms And Water Bodies.
Residents and farmers thlNumesua, a farming community in the Ahafo Ano North District of the Ashanti Region have staged a protest against their chief for allowing illegal mining activities to take place in his area.
According to the farmers, the illegal mining activities which is currently going on in the area is steadily destroying cocoa farms and water bodies hence the call on the appropriate authorities to intervene before they take punitive measures against the chief and the illegal miners.
The farmers close to 500 wearing red beans amidst chanting war songs have already marched through the principal streets of the town to register their protest against the unlawful activities of the illegal miners of which the chief pretends as if nothing is happening in the area.
With their red bands, they eventually stormed the river banks where they poured libations by calling on the gods of the land ancestral fathers to deal with anyone who is behind the destruction of their cocoa farms and river bodies.
The farmers led by Mr Daniel Martey popularly known as EgyaDan, accused the chief of the town, Nana Kwadwo Mogyie of allegedly giving their farmlands to some miners who are illegally mining and destroying the community’s main stream been their source of drinking water.
Agya Dan who led the media to the mining site said the illegal miners have invaded their town with over 5 to 10 excavators, destroying their vegetation with impunity, but the chief remains silent.
Mentioning one Alhaji and Adams who are the behind the illegal mining activities, the farmers stressed that they are digging everywhere and clearing everything and anything that stand in their way including trees that have taken centuries to grow, water bodies, houses and even threatens those who dare stand on their way”.
“When we heard that galamsey activities were going on in our village, we quickly called the Chief of the town Nana Kwadwo Mogyie”
“The Chief told us that what is happening here has a permission from Manhyia and even Tepa Municipal Assembly has also given them a permit,” he added.
One of the farmers lamented that, they have done their checks from the Minerals Commission in Kumasi and pointed to the fact that, the assertion by the Chief of the town that the government of Ghana and Manhyia is false.
They are calling upon the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei Mensah, Minerals Commission and the Asantehene Otumfour Osei Tutu II to institute an inquiry into the behavior of the Chief concerning these matters and apply the needed sanctions.

They accused their chief, Nana Kwadwo Mogyie of allegedly giving their farmlands to some miners who are illegally mining and destroying the community main stream.
