Npp stalwart accuses Mahama administration of tax burden betrayal

The Communication Officer of the Sunyani East Constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Abubakari Yakubu popularly known as Baba Amando, has launched a scathing critique of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, accusing it of failing Ghanaians by introducing and increasing taxes, a direct contradiction of his 2024 campaign promises.

In an interview, Mr. Yakubu expressed his profound disappointment, stating that the recent surge in utility bills and the overall tax burden is a stark departure from Mahama’s assurances that he would abolish “unwanted taxes” and refrain from introducing new ones to improve the living standards of Ghanaians.

“I am amazed to realize how various taxations are overwhelming the country, leading to widespread criticism of the administration,” Mr. Yakubu stated.

He highlighted the recent hikes in electricity tariffs (dumsor) and fuel prices as examples of the growing financial pressure on citizens.

He questioned whether President Mahama has forgotten his pledges made while in opposition.

Mr. Yakubu urged Ghanaians not to be distracted by what he termed as negative tax developments, reminding them that the four-year term is not a long time to wait for a change.

He further questioned the NDC’s understanding of taxation, asking, “If the NDC believes that development is achieved through taxation, why did President John Dramani Mahama scrap the e-levy, which generated Ghc1-2 billion, and the bedtime levy, which generated Ghc500 million annually?”

He clarified that his concern wasn’t with the general collection of taxes, but rather focused on the president’s specific campaign promises to avoid introducing new taxes.

  • “I simply want President John Dramani Mahama to react to what actually pushed him to introduce new taxes, with regards to his campaign promises,” Mr. Yakubu concluded.
