While the scriptures speak of shepherds who care for their flock, modern day religious landscapes are increasingly marred by the commercialization of the Gospel where “spiritual directions” (Akwankyere) have become a lucrative business model rooted in fear, manipulations and greed.

From the use of strange ritualistic items such as red, black, blue and yellow eggs , salt, pepper, fruits and even cutlasses, the nature of these “directions” has strayed far from the teachings of Christ.

The latest incident which has rocked Kumasi Abrepo community serves as a chilling reminder of how vulnerable and desperate families are being exploited by self styled men of God.

A 36 year old woman, Afia Abrafi currently residing in Kumasi has found herself caught in a web of emotional and financial despair.

Her husband Kofi Awiah a taxi driver based in the United States, recently sent her a message that he has mistakenly knocked down a resident on the street and as a result, been arrested by the state security agencies for prosecution.

Fearing for her husband’s future and desperate for divine intervention the wife sought for a local pastor whose name is currently withheld for security reasons for. spiritual assistance and favorable outcome in the US court.

However instead of receiving comfort or prayers, the woman was met with a staggering financial demand.

The pastor allegedly informed her that for the husband to be set free he would need to perform specific rituals (Akwankyere) that require payment of GHC 1,000 (GHC 100 million in old currency).

No Room for Mercy:
Afia Abrafi indicated that when she expressed her. Inability to afford the charger (sum) because her husband had only been in his job for two months in US and was in no position to send funds from the US, the pastor reportedly displayed no empathy.

He allegedly refused to negotiate the price or accept payment in installments, leaving the already devastated woman with an ultimatum: pay the full amount or watch your husband’s fate hang in the balance.

Forced into a corner the woman is now reportedly scouting for loans just to meet the pastor’s demand a situation that has left her confused, frightened and mentally drained.

A Call for Vigilance
This incident highlights the growing trend of “spiritual extortion,” where desperate individuals are coerced into emptying their pockets under the guise of “spiritual direction.

Is the power of God now something that can be bought with a GHC 1,000 fee?

The Bible reminds us that the gift of God cannot be purchased (Acts 8:20), yet many pastors continue to use their pulpits to prey on the anxieties of the vulnerable.

As we continue to investigate this disturbing trend, advise those who prioritize the commercialization of the word of God over the salvation of souls. This website intends to continue our pursuit of this story and will not hesitate to expose individuals who hide behind clerical collars to rob the poor.
