In the tapestry of nation building, truth acts like foundation upon which stability is constructed is widely held that a nation that compromises on the maintenance of truth risks to collapse.
Standing firmly on this principle, a growing number of grassroots supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region are casting aside partisan blinders to offer their full support to the administration of President John Dramani Mahama regarding the ongoing arrests of the former government officials under Akuffo Addo regime who have been implicated in financial malpractice.
For these supporters the message is clear: Ghana is not the personal property of any political party, individual or any group of people.
The Npp supporters indicate that if state coffers have been raided the law must take its course without fear or favor.
A Rejection of “Empty” Demonstrations:
This grassroots awakening comes as a direct response to the recent NPP led demonstration dubbed Democracy Under Attack.
Many within the party’s own base have dismissed these protests as hollow and baseless,, a narrative they believe lacks a clear and positive objective for Ghanaians.
Kwame Ofori a self confessed NPP supporter off Ashanti Bekwai noted that while the demonstration may be a legitimate expression of opinion, it was misdirected.
Why should the party be angry in the face of genuine arrests of corrupt officials? Ofori asked and pointing to the necessity of accountability regardless of political affiliation.
Voices from the Grassroots
The sentiment was echoed across various districts that signalled a shift towards civic accountability over tribal politics.
At the Ejisu market Ante Mansah a trader and NPP member offered a blunt assessment saying nobody should blame President Mahama for these prosecutions.
If your hands are clean what are you afraid of, she questioned and stressed that she prefers genuine justice over the noise making emanating from the party’s leadership.
In Offinso another party stalwar Kofi Abebrese challenged the leadership’s of the New Patriotic Party stance directly.
He posed a probing question to those who organized the protests: Are you suggesting that those implicated in these fraud cases should be simply set free because they belong to our side of the divide?
The consensus among these supporters are that the NPP leadership is attempting to create a scene to distract public attention from the alleged financial crimes perpetuated during the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo administration.
Opuuni George, a vocal supporter from the grassroots dismissed the idea that these arrests are politically motivated victimization.
I am here in peace and I am NPP supporter. Has President Mahama arrested me?
He noted that the law only targets those who have breached the public trust, he stated.
He added that Ghanaians are ready to rally behind the government to reclaim state funds that are currently in the pockets of private individuals.
As the national discourse intensifies, Agya Marco of Asokwa offered a final word of admonition to the President to remain steadfast and apply the law with uncompromising rigor.
Retrieve the looted treasures of the state without fear or favor, Marco urged and insisted that Ghana does not belong to any one person and no individual is above the law or untouchable.
