Press Release: ASEPA Gives Ministry of Health 24 Hour Ultimatum To Clear Donated Family Planning Medications From The Port.

ASEPA has noted with deep concerns the Ministry of H mmealth’s inability to clear family planning medications donated to Ghana by donor partners from the Tema port since February 2024.

Our checks at the regional medical stores across the Countries reveals that these medications have been in short supply since February 2024, meanwhile these medications donated to Ghana by our donor partners have been sitting at the port for over six months now with the Ministry telling donor partners it has no money to clear these medications from the port.

It would be recalled that a few months ago similar medical supplies donated to Government we left rotting at the port close to a year. In another instance, a donor donating medical equipment to the government had to re-route the equipments to another Country for donation because the government had requested it to pay a heavy import duty at the port.

We believe this trend by Government is stifling donors’ appetite for Ghana for the much-needed medical supplies. The Country cannot afford to scare these benevolent donors away especially at a time when Government finances are seriously constraint with the current economic downturn.

We are thereby giving the Ministry of Health and Ghana Health Service 48 hours to clear these medications from the port. After the 48-hour ultimatum, ASEPA would mobilize well-meaning Ghanaian women who are in serious need of these family planning medications to demonstrate at the Ministry until the medications are cleared.

Find attached details of the medications currently languishing at the Tema Port since.
