The investigation into the shooting incident at the Kumasi Bantama SDA Senior High School on April 4,2025, where a student allegedly used a locally manufactured gun to shoot two students, has taken a new turn. Police have declared the father of the suspect, Bernard Amoateng, wanted to assist in their investigation. According to police sources, Bernard Amoateng, the student accused of firing the gun and injuring a female student Suzzy Penamang and one other student, claims the weapon belongs to his father and was taken without his consent from their home. Despite Bernard Amoateng allegedly taking responsibility for the shooting and pleading for his father’s freedom, police are treating the matter with seriousness. They cite laws pertaining to unlawful possession of firearms and the severe nature of shooting incidents as reasons for pursuing the father’s involvement. Efforts to arrest the father have so far been unsuccessful, but police confirm he is under surveillance. The police have also seized the empty cartridges as evidence. Their investigation indicates the locally manufactured gun was loaded with one BB ammunition when it was brought to the school. Meanwhile, the Mp for Bantama Constituency Hon. Boakye Asenso has. offered support for the injured student of the Adventist Senior High School The headmistress of the school, Ms. Grace Kafui Ayi, whom the students are calling for her interdiction has submitted a report to the SDA schools’ management in Kumasi regarding the incident. According to a report sighed by Yen.com.gh, the headmistress detailed Bernard Amoateng’s movements leading up to the shooting. The report states that Bernard Amoateng, a second-year student, was granted an exeat on March 18th at 5:30 pm to visit a hospital in Kumasi Krunom. He was reportedly scheduled to return to school on March 20th but allegedly failed to do so. The headmistress’s report further indicates that Bernard Amoateng secretly attended classes as a day student, despite his status as a boarder, without the knowledge of school authorities until the shooting occurred. Sources close to the SDA Ashanti regional management of schools suggest that the headmistress’s report is currently under review. However, some students who claim to have seen the report have reportedly expressed skepticism, questioning why school authorities failed to inquire about Bernard Amoateng’s health and the doctor’s findings when they saw him at school after his authorized absence. They also raised concerns about the boarding attendant’s lack of oversight regarding a boarder’s unexcused absence from the boarding house. This incident continues to raise serious questions about the safety and security protocols within the school and the circumstances surrounding how a student was able to acquire and bring a firearm onto school grounds.
